How the Pinyin Tutor works

The Pinyin Tutor tests the
student’s ability to recognize the sounds of Chinese and to produce
correct Pinyin. The basic version of the Pinyin Tutor works as follows:

The
student listens to a recording of a Chinese word and then must type in
the correct Pinyin spelling. Feedback is provided following each entry.
The student is congratulated for correct entries and given specific
feedback about errors. When a target word is spelled correctly on the
first try, the word is logged as “learned” in the system and the
student moves on. When the spelling is incorrect, the target word is
logged as “not learned” and it will be presented again until it is
learned. At the end of each lesson the user's total percentage correct
is displayed.

The teacher may access progress reports on an individual and aggregate level for all of the students in his/her class.

Pinyin Entry
Conventions

When entering Pinyin in the Pinyin Tutor, the following conventions should be followed:

  1. Tones are represented by the numbers 1,2,3,4 and 5. The number 5 represents the nuetral tone.
  2. The letter [v] is used in place of the letter [ü] for ease of entry.
  3. The
tone number comes after all letters for the entire syllable. For
example, the word xué is spelled as [xue2]. In multisyllabic words,
spaces are not used between syllables. For example, xuésheng is spelled
    as [xue2sheng5]

Automatic Reports, Customization, and Tracking:

Although users are free to use the Tutor on their own, we are
particularly interested in supporting the structured use of the Tutor
as a required for-credit assignment in formal classes.  For this mode
of deployment, we have constructed word lists that match up with each
of the six major textbooks for Introductory Chinese.  Instructors can
contact us if they wish to have websites configured particularly for
their courses.  In such cases, we then also provide instructors with
their own webpage that summarizes how each of their students has been
progressing through these lessons.  Using this website, instructors are
thereby spared any of the work of grading papers and can simply grade
and monitor their students by consulting the summaries at their own
specific grading sheet.
