The department of Modern and Classical Languages is seeking a non
tenure-track temporary appointment for academic year 2008-09
(Visiting Assistant Professor or Lecturer, depending on credentials).
Salary is dependent upon qualifications (Ph.D. or M.A.) in Chinese
and experience (evidence of successful teaching experience). A
successful candidate will be able to teach Chinese language classes
at various levels of the curriculum (including a film class).
The department of 30 full- and part-time faculty offers programs in
Chinese, Classics/Latin/Greek, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, and
Russian, with special strength in teacher training. While primary
emphasis is on teaching, research and curricular development are
important as well. A Language Media Center and two "smart
classrooms" are vital features of the department. Several Modern and
Classical Languages faculty members participate in interdisciplinary
programs such as Linguistics and East Asian Studies, and many also
work in the related areas of cultural studies, film, and gender studies.
Western Washington University serves over 12,000 full- and part-time
students on its 190-acre campus overlooking Bellingham Bay, and
employs over 400 full-time faculty. WWU is one of six state-funded,
four-year institutions of higher education in the state and operates
on a September-to-June academic year (quarter system). Bellingham is
located between Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia.
Screening of applications starts on March 15, 2008 and will continue
until temporary position is filled. Interested candidates should
submit a letter of application, vita, sample of student evaluations,
and three letters of reference which address teaching skills, to:
Prof. Brent Carbajal, Chair
