Established in 1973, the program is sending its 35th cohort of young
Americans for year-long internships in East and Southeast Asia in
2008-2009. More than 500 Luce Scholars have participated in the
program since its inception, including 17 in the current year. A full

The director of the program reports to the president of the Luce
Foundation, and works closely with the Luce Scholars coordinator of The
Asia Foundation, which annually assists with the placement and
supervision of Luce Scholars during their year. The current director
will retire at the end of 2008, and continue to work with the network
of former Luce Scholars. The Luce Foundation seeks a new director to
begin full-time employment by December 1.
Candidates should demonstrate a capacity to promote the goals of the
Luce Scholars Program, including a broad knowledge about East and
Southeast Asia, and the desire to foster the development of young
leaders. Preference will be given to candidates with a
graduate/professional degree in a relevant discipline, as well as
fluency in an Asian language. Essential are strong skills in
administration, communication (oral and written), and collaboration.
Based in New York, the director must be open to travel to East and
Southeast Asia several times each year.
The Luce Foundation offers its employees competitive compensation and
